For more about Islamic Economics, you can follow us on Twitter! twitter.com/islameconomics )

Is Conventional Theory of Economics Totally Irrelevant?

As the following quote from Harvard Professor Zuboff (2009) indicates:

“I spent a quarter-century as a professor at the Harvard Business School, including 15 years teaching in the MBA program. I have come to believe that much of what my colleagues and I taught has caused real suffering, suppressed wealth creation, destabilized the world economy, and accelerated the demise of the 20th century capitalism in which the U.S. played the leading role.”

We weren’t stupid and we weren’t evil. Nevertheless we managed to produce a generation of managers and business professionals that is deeply mistrusted and despised by a majority of people in our society and around the world. This is a terrible failure.”

I do not agree with the Islamic economists who say we can take from Their Economics whatever does not conflict with our beliefs. This would mean we believe with their economic philosophy and differ only in details.

I do not subscribe to this view

However, Their Economics may be relevant only to study what we may call dark side of human nature

Testing Our Theory of Economics

Will we be able to get the required data and from what source?

In the paper I have given a very brief account of how the theory can possibly be tested.

The main source of empirical data will be based on household surveys that are being conducted in many countries and are more or less standardized

Many of the countries, including several Muslim countries have elaborate network for compilation and collection of statistics on different aspects of society. They conduct opinion surveys also very frequently.

This network can conveniently be utilized to develop data needed for the purpose of Islamic economic analysis in our framework.

(This is a paper which is published and presented by Dr. Fahim KHAN during Islamic Economics Workshop in 2013, Istanbul Turkey.)

Science of Economics Now Carries the Same Significance as Medical Science

One is supposed to heal the sickness of the body of human being and the other is supposed to heal the economic diseases faced by human beings.

Despite so much development in the science of Economics, humanity continues to suffer overwhelmingly from hunger, starvation, extreme unequal distribution of income of wealth, waste of resources, environment pollution, deprivation from basic human needs like education, health, etc.

Why this failure?

An important point to note

It is now well documented that the base of almost all sciences of modern world was laid down during what orientalists like to call medieval ages and we remember it as early period of Islam

Economics is an Exception

Its foundations were laid down less than 300 years ago. And it did not like to pick up anything from Muslim heritage in this area despite that the inventors of Economics had access to the seminal work of scholars like Ibn-i-Khaldun.

The theme of the work of Ibn-Khuldoon was in fact “Wealth of Nations”, which Adam Smith adopted seven centuries later without any reference to Ibn-Khuldun.

“500 years of Gap” in Economic Thought?

Schumpeter, the Economic Historian claimed that there was a gap of five hundred years in history of economic thought, (between 8th century to 13th Century, when Europe was living through dark age). Muslims have now refuted this gap theory. They have shown scientific knowledge in all areas including Economics was thriving in Muslim World during those 500 years. For example see, S. M. Ghazanfar.

It was this period for which CEO of HP (Hewlett Peckard) said

“When other nations were afraid of ideas, this civilization thrived on them, and kept them alive. When censors threatened to wipe out knowledge from past civilizations, this civilization kept the knowledge alive, and passed it on to others.

“While modern Western civilization shares many of these traits, the civilization I’m talking about was the Islamic world from the year 800 to 1600, which included the Ottoman Empire and the courts of Baghdad, Damascus” (Carly Fiorina)

Another point to be noted is that the so much celebrated modern science of Economics, winning a noble prize every year admits that it does not apply to the Third world economic problems where bulk of the humanity lives. It also admits that economic problems like environment pollution, sustainable development do not fall within the scope of this science.

But even for developed economies, it fails to stop recurring financial crisis, business cycles, class conflicts etc

The conclusion is inevitable.

Modern economics is of no use to us or to them (Hardly needs to be proved)

Their methodology is faulty and cannot help us understanding Economics embedded in Islamic system of life

We, therefore, have to Revisit the Foundational Concepts and Thoughts in Islamic Economics and think independently.

The 8th World Islamic Economic Forum will be convened this year in the Iskandar Development Region of the state of Johor, Malaysia, the fastest growing economic region in the country and one of the most significant business districts in Southeast Asia. Held at the Persada Johor International Convention Centre on 4 – 6 December 2012 with the theme “Changing Trends, New Opportunities” the 8th WIEF will discuss the changing dynamics in global business today after the Arab uprising and Eurozone crisis which leaves many doors open to new business opportunities elsewhere across the globe.

THE THEME

“Changing Trends, New Opportunities”

The emergence of China and India has reshaped the global supply chain and the dynamics of the global business community. Still flushed with oil cash, the historic transition of the Middle East is calling for more equal access to economic opportunities and home-grown recipe for reform. Asia, despite the wide range of national economic performances, is the new darling of global capital. And out of the ashes, Africa’s steady progress is gaining momentum in recouping its economic and social development. On the other side of the world, the debt crisis has taken its toll. The Eurozone is faced with the spectre of disintegration, threatening the integrity of the Euro. Europe faces a stagnant economy and unemployment. The US economy is recovering from a near debt default.

While 2011 was a year in turmoil, 2012 is hoped to be the year for consolidation. Albeit the increased uncertainty and greater risk aversion in the financial markets, massive capital transfers are taking place. And, in its wake, the demography is changing. Despite regional differences, the world is still very much interconnected. Crises in the West have direct implications on jobs and immigration in the East. The global supply chain will be adversely affected all over the world. How should the world respond to these developments? How can leadership deal with the current challenge?

THE ORGANISER

WIEF

The WIEF Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation based in Kuala Lumpur, organises the annual World Islamic Economic Forum, a world-class business platform showcasing business opportunities in the Muslim world, and runs programmes of the various initiatives of the Foundation that strengthen people partnership and knowledge exchange between Muslim and non-Muslim communities across the globe.

True to its commitment to ‘Build Bridges Through Business’, the WIEF Foundation also formed the WIEF Businesswomen Network (WBN), WIEF Young Leaders Network (WYN) and the WIEF Education Trust (WET) to focus on initiatives such as roundtable discussions, leadership programmes, business networking forums, and even creative arts festivals.

“Even though Grameen Bank is considered as an Islamic Bank for some, not considered as an Islamic bank for other some; it is not hard to see that the system of Grameen Bank is much like “socially-oriented” than other conventional banks. As it will be later stated; Grameen Bank is the Bank of the Poor, By the Poor, and for the Poor. The only Bank in the world to win Nobel Peace Prize.”

Banks and banking system are for rich, but not islamic banks. As the motto of Grameen Bank; “Grameen Bank is the Bank of the Poor, By the Poor, and for the Poor. The only Bank in the world to win Nobel Peace Prize.”

Grameen Bank is a financial institution and a development bank which was founded in Bangladesh and dedicated to make not-big loans to the impoverished. Banking system of Grameen Islamic Bank is giving the opportunity to poor people, especially the poor women living in rural areas; to develop themselves and let them to contribute to economic development. An important sign of the bank is that, nearly 99% of the Grameen Bank’s borrowers are women.

Methodology of Grameen Bank is exactly the reverse of the conventional banks. Conventional banks has their roots on “more you have, even much more you get.” That is to say; there is no place for poor in the conventional banking system. So, day and day, time and time, the rich is getting richer and the poor is getting poorer, as a result there you have that poor people in Africa, striving in hunger. The banking system of Grameen Bank is for poor, giving credits for poor people.

Grameen Bank was founded at the year of 1976 by the Nobel Prize winner academician and scholar Muhammed Yunus, after his long-time study on poor, hunger and banking system. The banks was officially on the market since the year of 1983 and still working. At the year of 2006; the Grameen Bank and it’s founder Muhammed Yunus have won the Nobel Peace Prize; as being the only bank in the history winning the Nobel Peace Prize.

-FACTS-

Right now, only in the country of Bangladesh, has more than 2500 branches, more than 22.000 people working the branches of Grameen Bank. Branches of the bank is serving for 82.000 villages totally. The number of borrowers of the bank is nearly 8.3 million and nearly 99% of the borrowers are women, poor women living in rural areas. Get-back rate of the loans by Grameen Bank is 97 per cent, which is much higher than other banks in the world.

Gross amount of the loans distributed by Grameen Bank is US$ 11.35 billion. US$ 10.11 billion of those was successfully got back. Current amount of the loans is US$ 968.31 million.

- NOBEL PEACE PRIZE, year 2006-

Grameen Bank received several prestigious awards including the highest civilian award in Bangladesh, the Independence Day Award, in 1994. However, the greatest recognition of the bank’s achievements came on October 13, 2006, when the Nobel Committee awarded Grameen Bank and its founder, Muhammad Yunus, the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize “for their efforts to create economic and social development from below.”[31] The award announcement also mentions that

From the very beginning, Grameen Bank draw a huge attraction in country and throughout the World. As a result of big success of the bank on poor and big contribution it has made to the economy, Grameen Bank has received a lot of awards.

The biggest award that Grameen Bank has ever get was certainly came on the day of October 13, 2006. It was announced at that day that; Grameen Bank and the founder, Muhammed Yunus has received the Nobel Peace Prize, 2006. The award announcement also mentions that:

From modest beginnings three decades ago, Yunus has, first and foremost through Grameen Bank, developed micro-credit into an ever more important instrument in the struggle against poverty. Grameen Bank has been a source of ideas and models for the many institutions in the field of micro-credit that have sprung up around the world.

The Nobel prize announcement was celebrated with a joy in Bangladesh.

——————————————————————————————————————————————-
